Genes are the enigmatic programmers of the natural world, sending out instructions that our cells interpret to build every living thing – from people and trees to fish. As a programmer in the software world, I wanted to use my favourite language to unravel some of the mysteries of genetics, learn how genetic data is sequenced with code and find a way to process my own DNA using a tool I built myself.
